35,000 – Attendance at the 2016 Rebel Stakes. $900,000 – Total purse of the race, with $540,000 of that reserved for the winner. $9,124,972 – Amount bet on Rebel Stakes day in 2016. In Allowance Stakes starting preference will be given to horses that have accumulated the highest earnings. 2016 at $750 for The Southwest, The Rebel and The Arkansas Derby.

Discreetness the Secret Choice in Rebel Stakes 2016: Better stay quiet on this selection, because Discreetness will offer value on Saturday in the Rebel Stakes (GII) at Oaklawn Park. While he finished seventh in the Southwest Stakes (GIII) last month, the connections are not discouraged and he presses on towards the May 7 Kentucky Derby (GI) in this prep race.

Trained by William Fires and ridden by Jon Court, Discreetness has compiled a 3 for 5 record on dirt. Xpress Thoroughbreds owns the son of Discreet Cat. Fires believes a wide trip cost his colt last time.

“Bad trip,” Fires said, as seen in the Oaklawn Barn Notes. “He was outside all the way. Ran a sixteenth a mile farther than anybody.”

Indeed, the jockey seemed content to let the wide trip happen. Rather than go for a more aggressive strategy of laying close, or falling back behind the crowd, Discreetness broke from the 14th post position and stayed around the outside path approaching the first turn. At least six horses were inside him on the actual turn.

He continued to race wide throughout the early portion of the race and began to move nearing the second turn. Once he hit fifth place though, Discreetness’ rally hit a roadblock and he could not sustain the run.

Luna de Loco, who also ran wide around the first turn and ended up floundering, returned to win an local optional claiming race over a decent field which included the notable Rated R Superstar. Discreetness deserves the benefit of the doubt and might be able to turn the tables with a more inside post.

Besides Discreetness, a couple of horses can win the Rebel.

Starting from the rail, Creator comes into the race off a seven-length win in a local maiden race. The Tapit colt is trained by Steve Asmussen and owned by WinStar Farm. Jockey Ricardo Santana takes the mount again.

Next to him, Ralis makes his return after finishing 14th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (GI). Whenever a Doug O’Neil-trained horse owned by Reddam Racing shows up, the public tends to overbet the horse. The switch from the outstanding Javier Castellano to Mario Gutierrez fails to make the contender appealing.

One spot right, Cupid makes the trip to Oaklawn for trainer Bob Baffert. He broke his maiden by over five lengths at Santa Anita Park in his initial route attempt. The connections paid a high price for this $900,000 son of Tapit.

A bit further out in the seventh slot, Creator’s stablemate Madtap goes for his third win out of six tries, as he tries to build on his six-length victory in a local optional claimer.

In the eighth post position, American Dubai attempts to keep the momentum going after a solid third in the Southwest. He endured the pace and kept on going, while Suddenbreakingnews and Whitmore took advantage.

Whitmore, unfortunately for supporters, draws the 12th post position this time. He began from the second slot in the Southwest. Physically, he still gives the appearance of a horse more suited for sprinting.

To the right, Cherry Wine will need to overcome a wide trip as well. In January, the Dale Romans-trained runner won an optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park by six lengths.

Suddenbreakingnews starts from far outside. Jockey Luis Quinonez chose to take back in the Southwest, which allowed his mount to save ground (at least compared to Discreetness). The same strategy appears likely.

Obviously, there are not many wrong choices in the Rebel. In a large field without a huge superstar, it is a good idea to support a horse who offers value because the favorites are not a whole lot more talented. Discreetness, despite possessing the same ability as Suddenbreakingnews, will offer value and should be used in tickets.

Discreetness (6), ridden by Jon Court, slips past Gordy Florida (5) and jockey Glen Corbett to win the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes on Monday at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs. Discreetness, a 9-1 long shot, passed Gordy Florida with a 16th of a mile to go. With the victory, he moved into eighth place in the Kentucky Derby standings.

The Rebel Stakes is a Grade 2 race held annually at Oaklawn Park as the second leg of the track’s three year-old stakes program that also includes the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes and Grade 1 Arkansas Derby. Inaugurated in 1961, the Rebel Stakes has always been run at the mile and one sixteenth distance. The purse for the 2015 Rebel Stakes was increased to $750,000 from $600,000. The race is part of the Kentucky Derby qualifying points system with the first through fourth place finishers earning 50, 20, 10, and 5 points respectively.

The Rebel has a well-established history of producing winners that go on to enjoy Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown success. 1980 Rebel winner Temperance Hill triumphed in the Belmont over Derby winner Genuine Risk and Preakness winner Codex. The 1990’s proved to be a successful decade for the Rebel with 1992 winner Pine Bluff winning Preakness, and 1998 winner Victory Gallop using the Rebel as a springboard to wins in the Arkansas Derby and Belmont. Victory Gallop also famously ran second to Real Quiet in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness before ending the latter colt’s bid to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1979. [+]

In the new millennium, Smarty Jones became the first of a string of prosperous Rebel graduates, winning the Arkansas Derby, Kentucky Derby, and Preakness before losing the only race of his career in the Belmont, falling just short of capturing the Triple Crown in 2004. The Rebel witnessed a string of major horses in the years following Smarty Jones with Lawyer Ron (2006), Curlin (2007), and Lookin at Lucky (2010) all becoming extremely successful racehorses, each winning at least one Eclipse Award. Curlin went on to win the 2007 Preakness and Breeders’ Cup Classic, while running third in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Belmont en route to Horse of the Year Honors. In 2008, Curlin won the Dubai World Cup, and several other major stakes races to repeat as Horse of the Year and retire with more earnings than any thoroughbred in American racing history.

The impressive feats of past Rebel winners has continued in recent years with 2012 Rebel hero Secret Circle winning the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in 2013, and falling just a neck short of duplicating that feat in 2014. In 2013, Will Take Charge was an unproven commodity before his Rebel victory, but went on to win the Grade 1 Travers and Grade 1 Clark Handicap, while running second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic to claim Three Year-Old Colt of the Year honors at the Eclipse Awards. 2014 winner Hoppertunity won the Clark Handicap and is considered one of the top horses in training in 2015. Vanlandingham holds the Rebel speed record, stopping the timer in 1:41 flat in 1984.

In the Rebel, 5-1 Madefromlucky and 8-1 Bold Conquest under the winner produced a $2 trifecta payout of $28.80. 2017 Rebel Stakes Contenders

With a full field signed on for the 2016 Rebel, the race had the look and feel of a wide-open wagering event with at least half of the 14 runners looking like legitimate win candidates. The field included the 1-2 finishers from the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes with winner Suddenbreakingnews and runner-up Whitmore returning as the respective favorite and second-choice. But in the end, the bettors and morning line oddsmaker did not lose sight of Cupid, who despite having just three starts and a maiden win to his credit, was sent to post at odds of 3/1 for trainer Bob Baffert. Baffert. And just like Baffert had done in 5 of the previous 6 years, the Hall of Fame trainer managed to saddle yet another winner perhaps even overshadowing Cupid’s impressive gate-to-wire performance. The gray son of Tapit looked to be in trouble in the stretch with Whitmore making a furious rally around the turn, but Cupid found another gear, pulling away for a length and a quarter win. The victory gave Cupid 50 Kentucky Derby qualifying points and marked the improving colt’s second win in as many tries in two-turn races.
